Retro Penpals

I’m an 80’s baby and back then we didn't have unlimited access to the internet and  we didn't even know we could have our own little piece of the interweb. No back then it was snail mail or as some would call it penpals.  I remember finding the “penpal” adds at the back of the magazine, and always wondering if I should or shouldn't. Because I was always active with dancing when I was younger, I didn't have a lot of time to socialize with friends and my mom thought it would be a great idea for me to start writing to penpals. Needless to say, I ended up writing to about 5 people.

Most where my age or younger but one I wrote to, whose ad said they were my age, turned out to be a guy in prison. That freaked me the hell out and I stopped immediately. Although I stopped writing to penpals, this continued writing, ignited a passion for it. I would write letters to my parents, my friends, my cousins and even my teachers. I remember folding them into elaborate hearts and every other shape you could imagine and decorating them with coloured pens.

As I have gotten older the writing on paper has stopped but the writing online has taken over. The most I write on paper now, is writing letters or notes to teachers, which I actually find very sad. I loved writing letters, expressing your affection for the person, and then placing it in a beautiful envelope. I miss the stamps and receiving a letter in return. Blogging to me is a bit like writing to penpals, except here it isn't just to one singular person, now it’s to millions! We share our photos and our stories, which is exactly what we did with penpals.

Modern PenPals

Imagine if we had to start writing actual letters again, with paper and pens, and not with keyboards. Only to one person. Imagine how creative we can get? We all love making things and being creative, right? I know I’m not the only one that hoards washi tape, glitter and stamps! Just thinking about how much fun and how creative I can be, makes me want to start writing now! Although I wouldn't know where to start, even looking on the internet doesn't help, because these days’ penpals are done via email. So I had this brilliant idea to see if any of my blogger friends would be interested in becoming penpals?

I know our lives are super busy, with blogging and events blah blah blah, but I’m reaching out and asking if anyone would like to start a revolution of writing again. It doesn't matter where you live, if you are up for the challenge, drop me an email and we can get cracking.
